Greetings my friends, and welcome to the December installment of Whatcha Reading, Paullina? the book blog about what I got the chance to read last month. December was hella busy…do the kids still say that? I don’t care, I still say it. Anyways, I finished five books last month and brought my final count to 72 books for the year!
I finished all of my contractual (book club) reading last month so this month was all fun reads and I am excited to share my thoughts on them with you all!
Light Bringer by Pierce Brown
I have recommended this series to so many people recently and I tell them, “It will ruin your life…but like in a good way.” This installment was worse than the others, and I am SO MAD that I have to wait for the next book. The rage that I felt after finishing this book was probably unhealthy. Pierce Brown needs to watch out, because if I ever meet him in real life we are gonna fight. One of my favorite series of all time, but the emotional damage is a bit much. I feel sorry for my fiancé who has had to listen to me rant about some of these characters for weeks on end.
Quicksilver and Brimstone by Callie Hart
Every Booktok girlie has been telling me to read Quicksilver for ages, and it just kept sitting on my TBR until now when the second book came out. I am glad I waited to read them both at the same time, but I wish I had waited until the series is completed. I liked the first one, and the hype around the MMC is legit, but I just feel like the second book had a lot going on but nothing really happened…if that makes sense? Brimstone set up the next book(s) but on its own was really underwhelming. Will I re-read these when the next book comes out? Yes, but I might wait until they are ALL out.
I, Medusa by Ayana Gray
I am a Medusa girlie. I have a Medusa tattoo. I love Greek mythology in general but Medusa is one of my faves and this book did not disappoint! As soon as I unboxed this book in the shop I knew I needed to read it. This reimagining of a traditional story that you are probably familiar with is right up there with Madeline Miller’s Circe and Song of Achilles which are two of my favorite books that I have reread a few times. The writing is beautiful, and the themes of sisterhood, and feminine rage were as deeply revenant to the world we live in today as to ancient civilizations. I love a good villain origin story, and this is no exception.
Eat the Ones You Love by Sarah Maria Griffin
I received this as an ALC from Libro.fm and I started it because I knew I would have time to finish it before the end of the year. It was short and a little spooky. This is a story about possession, and monstrosity, and working retail. It is about hunger and desire, and other terrible things that grow. Think Little shop of horrors but more stalker-y set in an awkward workplace love triangle. I wouldn’t read this again, but I have mentioned it to others who enjoy this type of story more than I do. I will give props to the narrators of the audiobook!
And that’s a wrap! December is done…we survived…barely. I will be posting another blog about my 2025 and 2026 reading goals soon!
Until the next chapter,
